Here’s a guide to help you get started and make the most of your chess set.
Setting Up the Game
-
Gather Your Players: Chess is a two-player game, but it can get very competitive and gather an audience!
-
Prepare the Board: Open your Luxury Travel Chess Set and lay out the board. Ensure that the bottom-right square is a light-coloured square.
-
Set Up the Pieces: Each player sets up their pieces on the two rows closest to them.
Pawns: Place all eight pawns on the second row from each player.
Rooks: Place them on the corners.
Knights: Place them next to the rooks.
Bishops: Place them next to the knights.
Queens: Place them on the remaining square of their own colour (white queen on white, black queen on black).
Kings: Place them on the remaining square next to the queens.
Basic Rules of Chess
-
Understanding the Objective: The goal of chess is to checkmate your opponent’s king. This means the king is in a position to be captured (in check) and there is no legal move to escape the threat.
-
How the Pieces Move:
Pawns: Move forward one square, or two squares on their first move. Capture diagonally. Pawns can be promoted to any other piece (except a king) if they reach the opposite end of the board.
Rooks: Move horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
Knights: Move in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular. Knights can jump over other pieces.
Bishops: Move diagonally any number of squares.
Queens: Move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally any number of squares.
Kings: Move one square in any direction. The king can also perform a special move called castling under certain conditions.
-
Special Moves:
Castling: A move involving the king and a rook, where the king moves two squares towards a rook, and the rook moves to the square over which the king crossed.
En Passant: A special pawn capture that can occur if a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn.
Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it is promoted to another piece (usually a queen).
-
Check and Checkmate:
Check: When a king is under threat of capture.
Checkmate: When a king is in check and there is no legal move to escape the threat.
-
Stalemate:
A draw condition where a player has no legal moves, and their king is not in check.
